Singapore Hot for Shakespeare




 
As the global financial crisis hits hard Broadway shows, more and more theatre productions are looking to Asia to stage their plays. We go to Singapore where Shakespeare’s play “The Winter’s Tale” is opening today. Co-starring Hollywood stars and the finest British stage talent, it is a truly cross-Atlantic production. Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale” opens today (March 26th) at Singapore’s grand Esplanade theatre. The Singapore Repertory Theatre co-commissioned the play to promote high art to the Asian capital. Its managing director says more and more theatre productions are looking at Asia to stage their shows. [Gaurav Kripalani, Singapore Repertory Theatre]: “Part of it is that there is financing available in Asia Ð even with the climate at the moment, people see huge potential. I think Singapore as an art’s capital is growing very rapidly.” “The Winter’s Tale” is from The Bridge Project, a cooperation between Oscar-winning film director Sam Mendes, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and The Old Vic in London, whose artistic director is Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey. The Shakespearean play stars British stage actor Simon Russell Beale and Sinead Cusack, as well as Hollywood actors Rebecca Hall and Ethan Hawke. The tone of the play is full of contrasts as it starts off as a comedy but ends up as a tragedy.
