Nine Rivers Gala Tuesday, October 7, 2008 Rubin Museum of Art 150 West 17th Street New York City The Rubin Museum of Art (RMA) has a unique mission to, present, preserve, and document a permanent collection of Himalayan art that reflects the vitality, complexity, and significance of the Himalayan region and to create exhibitions and programs that explore connections with other world cultures. From the peaks of the Himalayas – a Sanskrit word meaning the “abode of snow” – water streams south and east to create the most magnificent and revered rivers in Asia. RMA has named its annual celebration the Nine Rivers Gala because, like these rivers, RMA’s collection and programs illustrate the common origins of the region’s people and universal values shared by all of humankind. Romanian peasant blouses /Romanian folk art

The prototype of the women’s dress of the autochtonous population in Romania refered to some statuetes from 1500-1200 BC , comprises rudimentary elements , which in their general lines will preserved in the time of the thousands of years , with all their development from the morphological , ornamental and chromatic point of view . These elements are : the shirt , ” fota ” ( peasant skirt ) and the girdle inclusively some decorative aspects , here we mention ” altita ” ( the decorated portion applied on arm , near shoulder ) at the shirt . Herodot , through his reffering at the ornaments of embroidery from the Thracian’s dress gives a confirmation and testimony too , for a following period after the process of cultural differentiation between Thracians and Illyrians . From the Daco-Roman period are preserved the eloquent representation as the bas-reliefs with Geto- Daco figures which curl round Trajan’s column . After the organization of the first feudal Romanian state , more and more testimonies are coming to demonstrate the evolution of the traditional costume like : Cronicum Pictum Vindobonense ( 14-th century ) , mural pictures in churches ( beginning with 15-th century ) , albums and descriptions from the 16th century till the 19 th century and ethnographical reseraches . The Romanian traditional costume preserves its beauty during the time . The place of old pieces which are museum pieces today is taken by new pieces which give a new value , a new brilliance to the

Escultura Social: A New Generation of Art from Mexico City

The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University presents an exhibition of recent work by artists living and working in Mexico City. The young generation of artists in Escultura Social: A New Generation of Art from Mexico City” embrace non-traditional materials in their work, which includes video, photography, installation and performance. The exhibition will be on view at the Nasher Museum of Art from through June 7. The exhibition is exciting because it pushes our ideas about what is considered art, said Kimerly Rorschach, Mary DBT and James H. Semans Director of the Nasher Museum. Here, conceptual art mingles with popular culture in sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, yet very creative ways. We are pleased to present work by artists who have helped make Mexico City a thriving hub of contemporary art over the past 10 years. The term escultura social, or social sculpture, came from German performance artist Joseph Beuys, who said that sculpture, if made from everyday materials and displayed in a real-world setting, has the potential to affect society most broadly. The works are all socially engaged, they draw connections between nature and culture, they revisit conceptual practices/actions from the 1960s, and promote a demystified and democratic idea of art-making, said exhibition curator Julie Rodrigues Widholm, who is the Pamela Alper Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. “My objects are to be seen as stimulants for the transformation of the
