A Zarzuela & Other Lost Works for Wind Ensemble by Jason Thorpe Buchanan (サルスエラと失われた音楽的断片/ジェイスン・ビュキャナン) was written between June and October 2007. A first attempt at writing for large instrumental ensemble, with the encouragement of Dr. Edward Harris of the San José State University Wind Ensemble, I was able to finish a first draft and have it read by his ensemble in March of 2008. Later, with the knowledge I had gained from this experience and the support of Maestro Takayoshi “Tad” Suzuki, I completed a final revision and re-orchestration in October of 2008 for a premiere performance in Tokyo, June 2009 by the Tad Wind Symphony. Lost Works refers to how the piece is constructed, utilizing thematic material and textures from various early sketches of chamber music I had written. These sketches were lost in the sense that they never really found a place in the music I was writing at that time. In the summer of 2007, I had been approached to write a chamber opera reminiscent of a Zarzuela, which is a form of Spanish opera or musical theatre. After writing much of the principal harmonic and melodic material, the chamber opera project fell through and I was left with a number of rough sketches. These were the basis for two of the large sections, my intention being to make a unified work from several parts that were lost. The original text also covers similar themes; a woman is left by her husband and is awaiting his return, but without knowing his …
The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University presents an exhibition of recent work by artists living and working in Mexico City. The young generation of artists in Escultura Social: A New Generation of Art from Mexico City” embrace non-traditional materials in their work, which includes video, photography, installation and performance. The exhibition will be on view at the Nasher Museum of Art from through June 7. The exhibition is exciting because it pushes our ideas about what is considered art, said Kimerly Rorschach, Mary DBT and James H. Semans Director of the Nasher Museum. Here, conceptual art mingles with popular culture in sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, yet very creative ways. We are pleased to present work by artists who have helped make Mexico City a thriving hub of contemporary art over the past 10 years. The term escultura social, or social sculpture, came from German performance artist Joseph Beuys, who said that sculpture, if made from everyday materials and displayed in a real-world setting, has the potential to affect society most broadly. The works are all socially engaged, they draw connections between nature and culture, they revisit conceptual practices/actions from the 1960s, and promote a demystified and democratic idea of art-making, said exhibition curator Julie Rodrigues Widholm, who is the Pamela Alper Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. “My objects are to be seen as stimulants for the transformation of the …
Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art: Form, Balance, Joy Exhibition on view through October 17, 2010 Alexander Calder (1898–1976) is a towering figure of 20th-century art and one of America’s most recognizable and beloved artists. This exhibition pairs the work of Calder with the work of seven contemporary artists whose practices are bound to Calder’s legacy as modern sculptor—a sculptor of air, as he has been called. While a well-known, even beloved figure, Calder has not previously been considered an important point of reference for contemporary artists. This is the first exhibition to explore Calder’s significance for an emerging generation of sculptors, reconsidering his influence and his innovation through a presentation of his own work alongside the work of contemporary artists. The seven contemporary artists in this exhibition: Martin Boyce, Nathan Carter, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Aaron Curry, Kristi Lippire, Jason Meadows, and Jason Middlebrook, have taken important cues from Calder including a return to hand-on production, the creative reuse of materials, and explorations of form, balance, color, and movement. DANNY’S BIOGRAPHY I grew up in Augarten which is an area of a town called Rheinfelden in Switzerland where I also got educated. At the age of 7 I had my first Ballet lesson and as a teenager I was fortunate enough to take dance classes more seriously and that with great teachers like by Mr. Mazaudou and by the Ballet School of the Theatre Basel. At the age of 17 I started doing an apprenticeship with a major Bank in Basel, Switzerland but I also was very busy taking dance classes which I just loved doing. After a few months I progressed up to working full time at the Bank in Basel as a cashier/personal banker and then in Lucern for a few months to save up some money. In 1996 at the age of 18 I packed up my suitcase and was very happy to be able to move to London and I went to study dance, choreography and performing arts at London Studio Centre (Kings Cross) and dance and performing arts at the prestigious Arts Educational School (Chiswick) in London. Extended studies led me to Hamburg, Berlin, New York and Los Angeles. I am trained in Jazz Dance, Street Dance, Contemporary Dance, Ballet and I am familiar with lots of other dance styles. As a Professional Dancer I have worked for recording artists such as Pink, Geri Halliwell, DJ Sammy ft. Do and on TV shows such as Top Of The Pops, Disney Channel Show, Children In Need, MTV TRL, Popworld, GMTV, Pepsi Chart Show, SMTV Live and CBBC Shows.
