I had forgotten how much Ibert sounds like 1930s and 40s film. Although I played saxophone for many years, I prefer the flute concerto. The saxophone concerto sounds like a knockoff.
Nice projection. You’ve played this piece in it’s proper setting. Most players will never get to do that. Good job!
Good for your friend…it’s a tough piece!! I got the outstanding performance award for my center at state contest my sophomore year with this, and got into the all-state band with this. And my comments are from experience…not ignorance. I’ve heard tough solos like this be performed really poorly, and it frustrates me. I don’t mean to be judgmental, just realistic. MOST 15 or 16 year olds don’t (and shouldn’t) choose this. If someone is legitimately a good musician, I judge them on THAT!
actually, a friend of mine won state with this as a freshman. so it can be played excellently. stop making assumptions and being ignorant and judging people by their age.
Ok ok fair enough! Sorry about that. I started when I was ten. Most people don’t start when they’re six, so you proved me wrong there. I just hate when people play good songs half-assed. But it sounds like you have a good work-ethic, so good for you! My bad…sorry.
@Finne116 wow asshole ive been playing for 8 years. so yeah i believe i am capable of playing this up to the standards that it should be at considering ive been working on it for a couple of years.
Yeah…right. So I guess we’ll see you at Berklee or Julliard in a few years then?? Don’t mean to offend you, but I’m pretty sure no 14 year old is capable of playing this up to the standards that it should be at. I played this when I was 16. But not an 8th grader/freshman…i don’t believe you.
Other than your nervous interpretation within the cadenza and occasional over accenting of certain syncopations, I congratulate you and the orchestra on a fine performance.
Let him do what he wants. He will learn by playing this piece what it takes to pull it off and with that will come this ‘maturity’ you speak of. It takes a lot of nerve telling people what they can or can’t do.
And how exactly do you know that? I’ve been playing in the altissimo register for at least three years now, and i’m only 15. Don’t make assumptions, you just look like a horse’s ass.
A 14 year old doesn’t have the musical maturity to play this piece to its full potential, and I know for a fact that you can not play the altissimo in the piece. Playing a piece when you are obviously not ready for it is the equivalent of spitting in the composer’s face to me. It’s like how I see so many bands butcher ‘Irish Tune from County Derry’ by Percy Grainger and Frank Ticheli’s ‘An American Elegy.’
Hey Bob!
What mouthpiece are you using in this recording?
Why does this video come up under Branford Marsalis!? Not cool

@pop0313: The conductor’s extra long trousers compensate for the violist’s extra short trousers. LOL. OK, seriously, this kid is beast. BRAVO !!!
Correction: I did part 1 of the Concertino, not this one.

10% slower = 1000% music
…such a profound notice.. The violist is a great player!nCheers from a london collegue
Look at the black viola on the right … His pair of trousers is very short … haha .. very funny ..!

haha, this comment made me smile
Playing altissimo notes is good and everything, but playing them effectively is what separates the men from the boys
haha i can play to altissimo d-sharp and im 14. but it’s difficult in these movements. i’m playing the first movement currently =)
Then you should have no problem creating a recording with you playing an altissimo E with it sounding half way decent.
And how exactly do you know that? I’ve been playing in the altissimo register for at least three years now, and i’m only 15. Don’t make assumptions, you just look like a horse’s ass.
you are right about irish tune and an american elegy

don’t say that younger musicians can’t play this piece just because you can’t. I’m 14 and am playing this in competition. Don’t discourage!
The last movement is my favorite thing to play! Bravo on this performance!
